What plasterboarding is
Plasterboard is the sheet material behind most modern internal finishes. Enquiries here are for domestic work such as:
- lining a wall or ceiling before skimming
- replacing damaged board after a leak
- boarding new studwork (a partition, a loft change, a small conversion)
- overboarding a ceiling that is too uneven or textured to skim as it stands (see ceilings)
Dot-and-dab on masonry, or mechanical fixing to timber or metal, are decisions for the plasterer on site. This page does not specify a method.
What to include in an enquiry
- Town or full postcode
- Walls, ceilings, or both
- A single wall, a room, or several rooms
- Whether studwork is already up
- Fireplaces, windows, sockets and pipes you can see
- Ceiling height and stairs
- Who you expect to supply the board
- Parking and access for sheets (they are awkward on the narrower stairs off Ballygate and Blyburgate)
If the job is really a small hole, patch repairs may be enough.
What usually affects a quote
What will the plastering cost? Typical factors:
- Square metres of board
- Number of cuts, sockets and openings
- Whether insulation or moisture-resistant board is needed
- Ceiling work versus wall work
- Access for full sheets
- Whether a skim is included
- Waste from old board
Moisture-resistant or fire-rated board, if required, is for the plasterer (or your building work) to specify. This site does not design the wall.
Materials
Do not assume the introduction includes supply. Some plasterers bring board and beads; some ask you to. Say on the form if you already have materials on site.
