When a patch is the right enquiry
Use this page when the rest of the room is largely fine, and you have a limited area of damage, for example:
- a leak stain, once the leak is fixed
- holes after electricians or plumbers have chased in
- a blown spot around a socket or window
- a crack you want looked at before decorating
- a small ceiling mark (see also ceilings)
If most of the wall is failing, a plasterer may recommend a room skim instead of a series of patches. That is their judgement, not something this site can promise from a form.
Matching the surrounding wall
A careful patch can be very close. It is not always invisible until you paint. Old lime, thick backing coats and modern skim all take the finish differently. On listed or very old fabric, say so. This introduction does not claim heritage-lime specialist status.
What to include in an enquiry
- Town or full postcode
- Which room and which wall or ceiling
- Rough size of the damage (hand-sized, a square metre, a strip along a chase)
- Cause, if you know it (leak, chase, impact)
- Whether the leak is repaired
- Photographs available or not
- Timing (small jobs are still subject to the plasterer's other work)

What will the plastering cost? Small does not always mean cheap: travel, protection and making good still take time.
- Size and number of patches
- Backing (board, brick, old plaster)
- Ceiling versus wall
- Access and furniture
- Whether decorating is included (usually it is not)
